The Emergence Of The East Franksih Kingdom 800 – 43
Bookmark this page

For a generation following Charles the Great’s coronation – attempts to consolidate te Carolingian empire from loose agglomeration rega bound together by church and aristocracy into a more permanent structure.

Louis the Pious provides de facto primogeniture for Lothar.  Father Louis tried to act in a Christian manner – 816 and 825 series of monastic and judicial reforms – Louis as Christian ruler.

Ordinatio – or split made by Louis the Pious – problems lay in transformation from continually expanding empire into a static structure – Franks run out of opponents after the Avars and Saxons and began to suffer serious losses – Viking and Saracen raids.  Defensive policy left structural weakness in polity dependent on inflow of loot and tribute and on charisma of militarily successful rulers.

Alternative to raid and conquest was internal redistribution – working influence at court, taking offices held by rivals – kept access to wealth – from Louis the Pious onwards we see loose aristocratic groups which might be called parties

Problems with substitution of Christianity for Frankishness as ideological cement which held empire together – Louis the Pious decrees no more secularisation church lands – good Christian King, but led to dissatisfaction both sides – ecclesiastics wanted restoration church lands – land owners threatened and worried that would be no more gifts etc.

Louis the Pious – reform, renewal consolidation – more set up as head of a Christian societ attempting to reform abuses more he became personally identified with reform – risked losing political credibility and loyalty on both sides – those who had something to lose, and those disappointed by lack of reform – same time as military effectiveness waned – Danish raids and problems Spanish frontier 826.
