Lois abandons reform, gives part of Lothar’s kingdom to Charles, more power to his wife Judith and family – changes and reaction brought underlying instability of Frankish politics into the open – whenever a settlement made too many people with an interest in overturning it for it to be come a point of equilibrium – not too many groupings but lack of them, too easy to change in the wind.
