Booty, tribute and lan had been driving force of Eastern Empire revival on 8th century, contued in ninth century.  But also general population increase after depression from plague will have added to growth – little evidence for increase productivity.

 

Resources of empire could evidently coup with the chrch building / re-building of the ninth century.  Lack of coinage compared to C the B in the west, but C the B needed coins to raise taxes to pay the Vikings off – function of coin by no means exclusively economic absence of coin hoards shows the absence of enemies not of money – did not pay tribute.

 

URBAN DEVELOPMENT – spread of post-Roman northern Europe model to east of the Rhine – bisoprics became core of urban settlements, centres of consumption and relatively small

 

Monasteries play a key role in trade
