Rapid development of east Frankish church, much less close to the Papacy than the Western counterpart.

Bishoprics became established powers: unashamed military leaders – sign that after foundation rapidly acquired landed wealth necessary for support large war bands.  Aristocratic familes gang a grip on certain bishoprics – east Frankish episcopate, ulike counts, were genuinely regnal and provincial in composition.

No intellectual backwater but hardly set the world on fire.
