•        No – this is symptom not cause.

•        Encroachment of public spaces, private baths etc. Subdivision – of grand houses for multiple dwelling / of colonnadd streets by small traders. Influx of refugees.

•        Kennedy – public spaces always under threat unless actively protected by civic authority. Not a shift in attitude towards urban space – just lack of planning!

•        Some Syrian towns privatised and reorganised on oriental ‘bazaar’ pattern. Buildings – some areas  complete demolition, elsewhere significant remodelling.

•        Ward-Perkins – C6 change from sentimental / aesthetic attitude to public buildings to more utilitarian approach – this approach forced by other factors – consider:
