w        Church provision of spiritual guidance and authority had undeniable political currency (e.g. St Gregory the Great – writings on pastoral care emphasise the importance of discernment of persons). Bishops could retain humility on personal level and deal with people – sense of perspective.

w        Popes less important than kings – respect in Rome and beyond as leaders in prayer. E.g. Gregory adopted fraternal attitude and did not play up his primacy.
