·        Perceived border marked or not by natural barriers.

·        LIMES – changed meaning to indicate Eastern desert.  No justification for calling borders limes.

·        Cannot show concept of lines or military frontiers important to Roman people “From he reign of Augustus to the time of Alexander Severus, the enemies of Rome were in her bosom”

·        Must assume from different meanings of limes that military installation served different purposes at different times.
