·        Natural barriers seen as obstacles preventing adequate action.  Only strategy he can think of is preventative or retaliatory – De rebes bellicus

·        Pliny shows similar attitude to natural barriers – no barbarian King will be defended against Trajan by “by the sea in between, by immense rivers or steep mountains”

·        PE

·        Persians could cross rivers easily – Procopius suggests Kurso could cross the Euphrates with 100 thousand med.  Can be used as a barrier, but not that effective.
